When pallet racking doesn’t work!
Pallet racking is excellent for uniform goods, but problems can start when it’s used for products it wasn’t designed to hold. For example, this could be sheet metal, timber or the storage of pipes.
In some warehouses this leads to long items pushed through racking bays, or products leaning against walls and increasing the risk of accidents (as well as potential damage to your stock).

Pallet Racking
Pallet racking has vertical frames and horizontal beams which make for fixed-shelf spaces. This limits the size and shape of products you can store and makes handling long items more difficult.
Cantilever
Cantilever racks use a single row of upright columns with adjustable arms. There are no front obstructions, the arms can be positioned to suit your stock, and long or irregular products can be loaded and retrieved more quickly.

Cantilever racking - a closer look
This type of storage system is, quite simply, made for bigger things. The structure is made up of vertical upright columns which are fixed into a heavy-duty base. Horizontal arms then extend from the uprights to support loads laid along their length. For ultimate safety, end stops prevent stock from falling off the arms.
Without the limitation of front-facing uprights typically present in standard pallet racking, irregularly shaped inventory or long items can be conveniently loaded directly onto the arms. The exposed front of the racking system improves access to inventory. Forklifts are utilised to retrieve stock from the arms.
Configurations to consider
To exactly meet your storage requirements, cantilever racking is available in single or double-sided configurations.
Single-Sided Cantilever
Single-sided cantilever racking has long arms fixed to one side of the upright and is usually installed against a wall. It’s frequently used in builder’s merchants, steel tube stockists, manufacturing facilities and warehouses.
Double-Sided Cantilever
Double-sided cantilever racking has arms on both sides of the upright, which enables easy access to both sides of the structure. This doubles storage capacity using the same upright.
Both options can be designed to suit your space and storage requirements.
Indoor & outdoor use
Cantilever racks are suitable for indoor warehouse applications or outdoor yard spaces when equipped with a galvanised finish.
This makes it suitable for builder’s merchants, garden centres and industrial outdoor storage areas.
Roofed cantilever structures are also available to help protect products stored outside.
