Double Deep Racking
Double Deep Racking: Maximise Warehouse Storage Capacity
When looking to maximise the footprint of your warehouse, you might want to consider pallet racking systems that increase loading density without minimising the footprint of your space. This is where Double Deep pallet racking can help.
By allowing pallets to be stored two-deep, this racking accommodates multiple pallet loads of identical products while also optimising the space and minimising the number of access aisles required.

What is Double Deep Pallet Racking?
Double deep pallet racking is an enhancement of standard pallet racking systems, designed to optimise storage capacity. This configuration allows for the storage of two pallets in depth, with one row positioned directly behind another. Consequently, approximately half of the stored pallets are immediately accessible from the front using a First-In, Last-Out (FILO) retrieval method.
With a FILO system, all pallets are accessed from a single aisle face, with aisle widths as narrow as 2,500 mm. This design significantly increases storage density within the facility. While access to rear-positioned pallets may be more limited, implementing an effective inventory management system can mitigate potential retrieval challenges.
Double deep pallet rack solutions require a specialist forklifts. These have a specialist forklift truck attachment with a telescopic fork, which enables the operator to place the back pallet onto the system first and then place another pallet in front.

Key Advantages of Double Deep Pallet Racking Systems
Double-deep pallet racking systems offer several key advantages, particularly for warehouses and storage facilities aiming to balance storage density and accessibility.
Here are the main benefits:
Increased Storage Density:
By storing pallets two-deep instead of one, double deep racking supports faster and higher storage capacity, more efficient order fulfilment all within the same footprint, ideal for warehouses with limited floor space.
Better Space Utilisation:
Fewer aisles are required compared to single-deep racking, which significantly improves overall use of available warehouse space.
Cost Efficiency:
The improved storage density can lead to lower costs per pallet stored, especially within a temperature-controlled room, compared to systems requiring more aisles.
Ideal for Identical Products:
Best suited for storing multiple pallets of the same SKU, making a simpler stock management system for bulk goods.
Improved Selectivity vs. High-Density Systems:
While not as selective as single-deep racking, double deep systems offer better selectivity than a LIFO system such as Drive-in or other FILO systems such as Push-back racking. This makes double deep pallet racks a good compromise between operational efficiency, accessibility for high throughput of orders and capacity.

Main Applications of Double Deep Pallet Racking Systems
Double deep pallet rack is ideal for operations that require higher storage density without switching to automated systems.
Key applications include:
Warehouses storing non-perishable or slow-moving goods
Ideal for items with long shelf lives where First-In-First-Out (FIFO) is not essential
Facilities requiring high density racking system
Double deep pallet racking allows storage of pallets two-deep, effectively increasing capacity within the same footprint compared to standard selective racking.
Bulk storage of similar items
Best suited for operations with multiple pallets of the same SKU, allowing efficient use of space while maintaining reasonable accessibility.
Warehouse and Distribution centres
Especially useful where rapid turnover isn’t necessary, but space efficiency is a priority.
Cold and frozen storage environments
Maximising high-density storage in expensive refrigerated space helps reduce operating costs.
Manufacturing warehouses
Suitable for storing raw materials or finished goods that don’t require frequent rotation.
Facilities with limited floor space
Double deep pallet rack optimises vertical and horizontal space, making it ideal for warehouses with footprint constraints.
