Push Back Racking

Push Back Racking for Space‑Optimised Warehousing

When designing the layout of your warehouse, you typically want to improve operations, enhance the warehouse flow of stock and increase pallet storage capacity. One storage solution you might want to consider is push back racking. This is a high-density storage solution designed to optimise warehouse space by enabling multiple pallets to be stored consecutively within a single rack, typically 2 to 6 pallets deep.

What Is Push Back Pallet Racking?

The operation of push-back racking systems is primarily based on the Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) principles. This configuration is especially advantageous for the bulk storage of multiple pallets containing identical SKUs and for items that do not necessitate precise date tracking.

Pallets are inserted and retrieved from the front of the rack, which is capable of accommodating up to ten pallets in depth. The system utilises a push back rollers, enabling pallets to be pushed towards the rear as new inventory is added. When pallets are removed, the entire row shifts forward toward the front of the aisle, facilitating efficient access and inventory turnover. This design supports optimised storage of multiple SKUs while minimising the need for extensive relocation of stock.

During the retrieval process, the forklift operator removes the frontmost pallet, causing the remaining pallets to advance smoothly along the inclined roller beds. This mechanism ensures that the front position remains consistently stocked and readily accessible.

Each roller system within the push-back racking system is equipped with strategically placed brake rollers to secure pallets and prevent dislodgement from the front of the rack. When combined with comprehensive operator training and strict adherence to safety protocols, these features promote a safe, efficient, and organised warehouse environment.

What Is The Difference Between Pallet Live And Push-Back Racking?

Pallet Live storage racking or sometimes referred to as gravity-fed system shares a similar design concept with push-back racking; however, pallets are loaded on the replenishment side and retrieved from the opposite side.

This system operates on a First-In / First-Out (FIFO) basis, meaning that the first items loaded onto the rack are the first to be retrieved. It offers high-density storage capabilities comparable to push back racking systems (up to 20 pallets deep), with the added advantage of accessibility from both ends, allowing for efficient loading and unloading from one side and retrieval from the other.

Key Advantages Of Push-back Pallet Racking Systems

Push-back pallet racking systems are a high-density, dynamic pallet storage solution where pallets are stored on inclined gravity flow roller system.

High storage density

Push-back racking allows multiple pallets (typically 2 to 6 deep) to be stored in a single lane, maximising warehouse floor space compared to selective racking.

Improved accessibility

Pallets are stored and retrieved from the same aisle, which reduces the number of aisles needed and makes retrieval faster and more efficient.

Faster loading and unloading

Push back racking uses inclined gravity-assisted roller beds to move pallets forward when one is removed, speeding up operations.

Reduced damage

Since forklifts do not enter the rack structure, the risk of damaging the racking or the product is significantly lower.

Increased selectivity compared to drive-in racking

While still a Last-In / First-Out (LIFO) system, push-back racking offers better selectivity than drive-in racks because each lane can store a different SKU.

Main Applications Of Push-Back Racking Systems

Push-back systems are a high storage density solution designed to increase warehouse efficiency by maximising floor space and improving inventory access.

Push back racking key applications include:

High-Density Storage

Ideal for storing multiple pallets of the same SKU in a compact footprint.

Space saving

Maximises vertical space by creating high-density, multi-deep storage lanes on inclined rails.

LIFO Inventory Management

Supports Last-In / First-Out (LIFO) inventory flow, making it suitable for products that don’t require strict stock rotation.

Temperature Controlled Rooms

Widely used in cold store, refrigerated or frozen storage environments where maximising cubic space is critical due to high operating costs.

Fast-Moving Consumer Goods

Ideal for retail and food distribution warehouses where large volumes of similar items are moved quickly.

Manufacturing and Assembly

Used to store raw materials or finished goods, supporting manufacturing and assembly lines.

Seasonal Inventory Storage

Perfect for businesses with fluctuating inventory levels or seasonal goods that require temporary high storage density
